In the year 2029, the world is at peace. The human race has been saved from a virus that killed 99% of humanity and the remaining humans live in harmony with machines. However, a group of rebels known as Zion are fighting to bring back their fallen comrades.

The the matrix online emulator 2020 is a game that will be released in 2020. It will allow people to play the Matrix Online game, which was released in 2003.

We just heard two years ago that the Matrix film series was receiving a reboot, replete with one of the original directors and many original cast members, including Keanu Reeves himself. One idea ran through the minds of MMO players: Someone bring back The Matrix Online! Oh, and maybe even a sequel! (Actually, don’t create a sequel; but, if you do, these ideas seem fantastic.) With the debut of The Matrix Resurrections trailer this week, all of those discussions have resurfaced.

I never played MxO since, at the time of its release in 2005, I was engrossed in World of Warcraft and Guild Wars, and the IP’s allure had mostly worn off on me. Missing the IP’s hype window was an issue for the game in general, as were all the problems, the tiny playerbase size, and the design that required a lot of gamemaster involvement, as MOP’s own Game Archaeologist has documented.

The game was eventually retired by SOE in 2009, but as we’ve seen, the game’s popularity lives on, and not just in witty tweets. In reality, a handful of organizations are still working on emulation in 2021. MXOemu had its most recent upgrade in July, but it seems that combat is still disabled and that it is mostly intended for exploration at the moment, while the Hardline Dreams server is still operational although a little quieter. I checked the MxO community Discord this morning, and they’re all laughing about Morpheus dying in the game and the inevitable mobile tie-in games.

Of course, there’s a petition to bring the game back.

In case you missed it, here’s the trailer for the film…

Discord is the source.

The why did matrix online fail is a question that has been asked for years. It seems like the Matrix Resurrections are making people want a Matrix Online resurrection.
