CNN —
The purported cult-favorite, all-in-one nonstick Always keep a pan., from brand Our Place, has plagued all of my social feeds for much of the year, dubbed “the kitchen magician” by Oprah Winfrey. The Always keep a pan. piqued my interest with its contemporary monochromatic appeal and promise to replace eight conventional pieces of cookware. But, after evaluating a dozen pans earlier this year and seeing that, once you reach a certain quality level, no two pans are same, I wanted to know: Is the Always Pan truly worth the hype?
TL;DR: It’s possible.
The nonstick pan that does it all
It’s beautiful, nonstick, and comes with a steamer basket. Is it, however, worth the hype?
Our Place
Always Pan
To begin with, the Always Pan came in fantastically eco-friendly packaging: Without a single piece of plastic in sight, everything was enclosed in a cardboard box, with thinner cardboard strips keeping everything in place – a complete victory for the ecologically conscious customer. The box also included a soft, dehydrated sponge and cleaning instructions in addition to the pan itself. (Before using the pan, you should give it a good rinse with soap and water.)
While the product description says that Always Pan is lightweight, it weighs 3 pounds and comes with a pound-plus cover. This frying pan is quite hefty for a frying pan, and I can’t picture anybody using it to flip flapjacks in the air (though maybe this is something that only occurs in cartoons?). The pan comes with two pour spouts, which are useful in principle but difficult to utilize due to the pan’s total weight.
Put the bulk of the pan down to its materials: According to the company’s website, it’s constructed of durable aluminum and has a nonstick ceramic coating that’s chemical-free. The pan seems very robust, comparable to normal cast iron, which can survive years of usage and damage (but only time will tell, since Our Place has just been open since 2019).
The Always Pan also promises to be nonstick, recommending users to use just a tablespoon or two of high-smoke-point fats (think olive, coconut, peanut, and avocado oils), which it does. Smashed potatoes, cheesy scrambled eggs, and fried fish all cooked evenly with hardly little residue clinging on the pan’s surface. Impressive! I also used the pan to boil some pasta; the 2.7-inch depth (with a 2.6-quart capacity) is much deeper than a normal frying pan, and my noodles came out perfectly al dente. The most thrilling part of this procedure for me was straining the pasta water with the steamer basket; the stainless steel basket isn’t large, but I was able to put a full box of manicotti in it, spilling just a few outliers in the sink. By the way, this steam basket performs its job of steaming very well. However, the gap between the basket and the pan’s surface is very little, and it may be inadequate when steaming anything that you don’t want water to get into. However, if you’re simply boiling a bag of frozen broccoli, you’re safe.
The beechwood spatula that comes with the pan fits like Tetris into its designated place, and although this feature isn’t absolutely essential for culinary success, it’s a nice touch. The spoon nestles securely in the pan rather than being placed on any clear area of the countertop, which may be irritating for someone who already has little counter space. I did found myself forgetting to take advantage of this benefit, but I believe that with a little more effort, I could learn to do so.
On the spatula: A nice wooden spoon is important for cooking, particularly since many pans, including the Always Pan, don’t mix well with metal, which may damage the coating and render the nonstick feature useless. The spatula, apart from its tidy “integration,” isn’t very noteworthy; it’s pleasant to grip but otherwise ordinary. My spatula is already stained crimson with spaghetti sauce after just a few usage, and because it’s a hand-wash-only piece of equipment, I expect it to remain that way. The spatula is also thicker than I’m accustomed to, and I couldn’t use it smoothly while turning over fish fillets or frying eggs (and so I used a different spatula, which is absolutely fine, but not when something claims to replace eight pieces of cookware).

Always Pan
This pan may entice you if you live in a tiny area, don’t have a large cookware collection, or just make basic dishes. Here are a few highlights: Even heating is a strength of the Always Pan. It has an incorporated spoon rest that keeps messes off the counters, and the steamer basket can also be used as a colander, which is a huge plus for anybody who gets a thrill out of using as little dishes as possible.
Where does it falter? While the pan may braise, sear, steam, strain, saute, and fry, none of these culinary verbs can be done at the same time. The advantage of having several pots on the cooktop is that you can steam vegetables in one while braising chicken in the other. It’s likely that this pan will take some getting used to for those (like myself) who are accustomed to using at least two burners at once. However, in my culinary experience, it’s preferable to prepare different items at the same time so that everything remains hot.
One item that surprised me was that the Always Pan is not intended to be used in the oven. There are lots of frying pans that can endure temperatures of up to 400 degrees Fahrenheit, and because this pan promises to be able to replace a variety of kitchen utensils, it would be even more useful if it could also be used as a baking dish.
This pan is presently on my cooktop, and it is very attractive. I’ll continue to use it, but it won’t be the only pan I use in the future. It’s not cheap at $145, but it’s also not a one-and-done purchase — you won’t regret purchasing it in a month. I believe it’d be a wonderful present for someone who is just starting out on their own (say, a college graduate), but it’s not a must-have for someone who likes to cook and cooks often.
The Always Pan is a new product that allows you to make your own pan pizza. It’s made with an aluminum cooking surface and non-stick coating, making it easy to clean up. Reference: the always pan amazon.
