This past Week 6 of the 2016 NFL season has been one of the most surprising weeks in recent history.
Despite a strong rookie season, Ryan Tannehill’s 2015 campaign didn’t do much to augment his stock, and his playoff performance against the Cincinnati Bengals may be the final piece of evidence needed to confirm that. Tannehill started off slow, completing just 25 of 50 passes for 277 yards and a touchdown to start the game against the Bengals. After that, however, things got ugly: Tannehill completed just 3 of 19 passes for 22 yards and two interceptions to close out the contest.
The Cincinnati Bengals are one of the more surprising teams in the NFL this year, and after an impressive win over the Dolphins last week, they remain in the playoff race despite having some rebuilding to do. Their most impressive win of the year, though, was probably last week’s 19-14 victory over the Miami Dolphins, which was the team’s first win of the year.
This offseason, the Miami Dolphins quarterback situation has been a major subject of discussion.
Tua Tagovailoa is the first. The second-year quarterback had a hit-or-miss rookie season and made a few mental errors in his first preseason game. Some Dolphins supporters questioned his capacity to improve in 2021 as a result of his mistakes.
Deshaun Watson is the second. Watson is a member of the Houston Texans, but his name has been linked to the Miami Dolphins as a result of his trade request. His present off-the-field legal problems, though, have stopped him from gaining any momentum so far.
Finally, there’s Reid Sinnett, a former undrafted free agent. Before the Dolphins’ preseason victory against the Cincinnati Bengals, few people had heard of him.
Reid Sinnett put on a show in the preseason that was nothing short of spectacular.
As an undrafted free agent who signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020, Sinnett’s NFL career got off to a shaky start.
He was released during final roster cuts after signing with the Bucs for a pittance of $152,000. Sinnett was quickly recruited to the Tampa Bay practice squad, but he only lasted three days before being cut from the Bucs organization. Sinnett had lost his position entirely by September.
Sinnett, on the other hand, was picked up by Miami less than a week after being released by Tampa Bay. The Dolphins’ practice squad spent the year with the Iowa native. In Weeks 12 and 17, he was promoted to the active roster, although he didn’t play a single snap in either game.
Sinnett became the Dolphins’ third quarterback after signing a future/reserves deal in January. He’s not wasting any time in seizing solid control of the position.
The Dolphins received a surprising amount of production from their third-string quarterback.
Sinnett seized charge of the day and displayed some excellent quarterbacking abilities after getting the start in the Dolphins’ third preseason game.
Sinnett passed for 343 yards and two touchdowns, including a game-winning fourth-and-15 touchdown pass.
Even though it was a preseason game against third and fourth stringers who are expected to be cut in the coming days, the Dolphins backup turned up a good showing. After the game, several media members poured their praises on Sinnett:
The Dolphins rested Tua Tagovailoa and experienced backup Jacoby Brissett, as well as almost every other expected starter, and Sinnett played the whole game. This year, he became the first NFL quarterback to throw for 300 yards in a preseason game. After Myarick’s score, Sinnett threw a two-point conversion pass to Malcolm Perry for 343 yards.

Having a developing quarterback on the roster, believe it or not, is an undervalued necessity in today’s NFL.
Not only does Sinnett have the potential to develop into a QB2 when the Dolphins’ current backup, Jacoby Brissett, is likely to leave in the summer, but he also has the ability to fetch a draft choice through trade if another club notices him.
Gardner Minshew was just acquired by the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for a third-round selection from the Jacksonville Jaguars. Teams are willing to pay a premium for young backup quarterbacks.
In any case, Sinnett’s progress is a big victory for the Dolphins. His presence provides the front office with a lot of roster flexibility in the future.
