In addition to reference cards, various partner cards (custom designs) are available for the launch of the new RTX-2000 series (Founders Edition). We directly tested an ambitious custom version of the 2080 Ti with Asus’ Geforce RTX 2080 Ti ROG Strix OC, which included a board and cooling particularly developed by Asus, as well as a slightly faster clock rate.
The RTX 2080 Ti ROG Strix OC is powered by the Turing generation’s TU102 processor and has a base frequency of 1.515 MHz, much as Nvidia’s Founders Edition. In comparison to the previous generation, the DirectCU-III cooling has been improved. In contrast to Nvidia’s Founders Edition with the new Turing generation, makers of custom designs will find it more difficult to stand out with pure performance in the review of the Asus Geforce RTX 2080 Ti ROG Strix OC. Because, despite the fact that the Asus card’s cooling effectively cools the TU102 chip, Nvidia seems to have more control over the highest achievable clock speeds than in the previous Pascal generation.
This is shown not just by the boost clock, which is only 15 MHz higher, but also by the clock rate under stress. AMD intends to outperform Nvidia in terms of graphics cards with the Radeon RX 5700 XT. We put the chip to the test in a gigabyte graphics card. It’s now AMD’s time after we looked at the MSI GeForce RTX 2070 Super Gaming X Trio, a representative of Nvidia’s current graphics card generation. The RX 5500, RX 5700, and RX 5700 XT are the three GPUs of the Radeon series that are currently available. All of them are DirectX 12 compliant and were created with gamers in mind.
The Gigabyte Radeon RX 5700 XT Gaming OC 8G is the first card in our test. The RX 5700 XT differs from the RX 5700 in a key ways: It has additional processing units (CUs), arithmetic logic units (ALUs), and a faster clock rate, all of which contribute to Half Life Alyx’s excellent performance. As a result, the RX 5700 XT is akin to Nvidia’s RTX-2070 Super series GPUs — essentially graphics cards for the top crust. The key distinction is that AMD doesn’t include any hardware-based ray tracing, whereas Nvidia does.
Although it has three fans, the Gigabyte Radeon RX 5700 XT Gaming OC 8G is nearly 10 inches long, so it takes up a little less room than the MSI GeForce RTX 2070 Super Gaming X Trio. It is approximately 4 inches in height and 2 inches in width. It features four display ports, same as the Nvidia graphics card, although only one of them is an HDMI connection. So if you try to connect an HDMI-VR headset and an HDMI display, you’ll run into issues.
Alyx’s Half-Life performance
Let’s get started on the benchmark performance. The 3DMark and the VRMark are our synthetic benchmarks to begin with. It’s clear that the RX 5700 XT falls short of the RTX 5700 Super in terms of performance. Even the older GTX 1080 Ti outperforms the new RX 5700 XT in 3DMark.
In VRMark, which assesses the cards’ capabilities in virtual reality scenarios, a similar picture emerges. For this, there are three separate benchmarks, referred to as rooms. The Orange Room tests the graphics card performance in contemporary headsets. The Cyan Room requires DirectX 12 and has more demanding prerequisites. Finally, the Blue Room’s 5K resolution puts the card to the test (even though suitable headsets are not really available in stores yet).
The RX 5700 XT handily outperforms the Nvidia 1660 Ti and the older Radeon RX 580, but falls short in all RTX 2700 Super benchmarks.
Let’s move on to gaming-related benchmarks, where the picture alters somewhat. The AMD-optimized Far Cry 5 looks extremely well on the RX 5700 XT. The AMD graphics card delivers much more frames per second than the RTX 2700 in all three test runs (Full-HD, 1440p, and UHD, all graphics settings on Ultra).
Metro: Exodus, on the other hand, is not specifically designed for AMD. The RX 5700 XT achieves good results here, although it falls short of Nvidia in terms of performance.
When playing Borderlands 3 at a UHD resolution and with the “Badass” graphical option, the GPU maintains a frame rate of 38 to 40 frames per second (everything up). The RTX 2070 Super can do that as well, although it is much more often at or above 40 FPS. In Doom, though, the difference is stark: the Nvidia RTX 2070 Super manages 60 to 120 frames per second with UHD and all graphics settings on Ultra, while the AMD RX 5700 XT reaches 50 to 70 frames per second. Of course, this is high-level complaining, but it still demonstrates where the limitations are.
Differences in power usage and temperature can exist. The RX 5700 XT reached 85 degrees in the benchmarks, while the Nvidia card remained at 69 degrees. In addition, the power usage is somewhat greater. However, AMD and Gigabyte deserve special recognition in this area: The fans of the RX 5700 XT perform well and silently. They effectively dissipate heat without the card, such as the RX 580, booming out of the casing. Even during extended benchmarks, the fans did not draw unwanted attention to themselves.
Conclusion: The best graphics card for Half Life Alyx in terms of price-performance ratio.
The RX 5700 XT will not be able to dethrone the RTX 2070 Super in terms of performance. It does, however, creep up to nearly arm’s length. Both in synthetic benchmarks and in real-world usage, the card performs well. The tested card is reasonably priced; some manufacturers even sell cards for less than $400. You should add an extra $100 to the counter for cards with RTX 2070 Super. As a result, the RX 5700XT takes home the award for greatest price-performance ratio in Half Life Alyx.

Although the TU106 is the simplest Turing-based GPU to yet, it nevertheless has 10.8 billion transistors on its 445 mm2 chip. This is still a huge number for a product that was formerly regarded to be in the center of Nvidia’s portfolio. The “Midrange Pascal,” the GP106, was a tiny 200 mm2 chip with 4.4 billion transistors.
Technical information and unboxing
The card is designed in the traditional MSI style, with no color embellishments. Later, RGB writing on the top side will take care of this, but that’s all there is to it. The design of the 7th generation TwinFrozr has no surprises, and (nearly) everything is identical. The normal 2.5-slot design and an extremely dark, anthracite-colored plastic cover leave little little adrenaline behind.

First, let’s return to the title. These super cards remind me a little of Nvidia’s non-A processors, which just couldn’t be faster since else a sisterly feast may have occurred. Unfortunately, this trend continues with the GeForce RTX 2060 Super, making it almost hard to push these cards past 2.1 Ghz, regardless of how efficiently they are cooled.
At this point, the MSI cooler performs well and silently, since there are still a lot of boost steps available at 62°C, which the reference card soon exhausts. This also explains why certain games, when the GPU is truly put to the test, perform so much better under stress. The MSI card does a good job of keeping the clock rate flexible, while the reference card does not.
The ingenious division of the sandwich design into two instead of one cooling and mounting frame is something we’ve been recommending to manufacturers for a long time. This implies that in such cooler systems, the memory and voltage converter are eventually thermally separated. The end outcome is visible and audible (or rather not). The TwinFrozr is self-contained and nearly unloaded.
Only the first start impulse while exiting passive state should have been a little more subdued. However, the hysteresis has been precisely done, as it always has been, so that all of this whining is at a very high level.

Half Life: Alyx’s Ultimate Graphics Card (GPU) Guide

Of course, the established metrics are still relevant, but the main issue is how high the resolution can be cranked (or must be decreased) with your own graphics card to retain the frame rate above the VR glasses’ refresh rate.
This is critical since otherwise, motion sickness may strike rapidly – solutions like Asynchronous Spacewarp can assist, but they don’t completely eradicate the symptoms. With the FPS, the objective should be to always surpass the headset’s Hertz. The visual quality may be improved by using a higher resolution (supersampling). The quicker the GPU, the more quickly it can be put to work.
There are currently no benchmarks with the index.
The editors utilized the Oculus Rift S for this test. The Rift S has a resolution of 1,280 x 1,440 per eye at 80 frames per second, which is pretty low these days. More is available with the Vive Pro, Valve Index, or HP Reverb. The amount of pixels that can be rendered on the GeForce RTX 2070 Super may be enhanced by 200 percent (factor 3) according to Nvidia’s current design, Turing. This is a 50% increase in pixels over the GeForce GTX 1080 and Radeon RX 5700 XT.
Old Radeon GPUs are definitely inspired by medium details.
In Half-Life: Alyx, AMD graphics cards are continuously slow, but the GCN generation has been hammered twice as severely. When you return to the medium detail level, however, a “GCN brake” is deactivated. This option doubles the resolution of the Rift S on the Radeon RX Vega 64, allowing the Radeon RX 5700 XT to push just 35% of the pixels over the wires instead of 61 percent in ultra-high.

For analysis, traditional FPS and frametimes are used.
Even though traditional frametimes, particularly FPS in VR games, have just a little impact, they are nonetheless noteworthy numbers: Because FCAT VR can read FPS and frametimes that aren’t slowed down by the VR glasses’ refresh rate, the actual disparities between graphics cards may be properly studied. The resolution of all 3D accelerators has been set to 3,080 3,310 for this reason.
The changes in FPS are fewer than predicted.
The results demonstrate that Radeon graphics cards can’t keep up with their GeForce equivalents, but they’re not as far behind as first thought. The GeForce RTX 2070 Super performs well, outperforming the Radeon RX 5700 XT by 25%. Turing works quickly in the game, with an average difference of 11%. But even it isn’t as much as you may think. The same can be said for the “internal duels” between AMD and Nvidia, where the differences aren’t as significant.
The frametimes depict the real issues.
The frame timings once again demonstrate why the supersampling effects are so obvious. The Radeon RX Vega 64 lags well behind the Radeon RX 5700 XT and the Nvidia accelerators in this area. In the test series, the Radeon RX 5700 XT with RDNA is 40% faster, while the GeForce GTX 1080 is still 35% faster.
The fact that the frametimes of the Radeon RX 5700 XT and the GeForce GTX 1080 are almost identical also demonstrates why both graphics cards have the same super sampling factor. The GeForce RTX 2070 Super’s outstanding performance is also validated in the frametimes. The Turing model performs 31 percent better than the GeForce GTX 1080, while the Radeon RX 5700 XT performs 27 percent better.
That’s how fantastic Half-Life is: Alyx
The gameplay test was done on Vive Pro, while the technical test was done on Rift S and Valve Index. As a result, statements concerning tracking pertain to their system.

When the game gets underway and comes out with its actual toys: Gravity, these issues are resolved. Gloves, weapons, and a puzzle-solving tool. The gloves are a brilliant idea: Using techno-telekinesis to grab items from a distance hides the absence of weight, prevents leaning down, and hides the illusion’s fragility behind smooth, pleasant interactions with meaning. They also function as a naturally retrievable HUD, whose usage becomes entertaining in and of itself because to how “normal” it seems. The sharpest arrow in Alyx’s quiver is thus constant virtual normalcy.
The game comes together as soon as there are devices, creating a rich environment and inviting you to really interact with your surroundings. Riddles, puzzles, and the very “daily” occurrences of exploration and shootings are all “virtually real,” that is, rational, intuitively solvable, and enhanced by the “fourth” dimension of unfettered camera movement. The taking cover, bending down to look under tables, pulling open drawers, and reloading, all of which involve several movements that quickly become hectic in a fight and usually make you forget that the illusion is just that: if the tracking fails, if the cranking becomes choppy, the Matrix reveals itself.
